Elvis Costello was as much a
pub-rocker as he was a punk-rocker and nowhere is that more evident than
on his debut, My Aim Is True. It's not just that Clover, a San
Franciscan rock outfit led by Huey Lewis (absent here), back him here,
not the Attractions, it's that his sensibility is borrowed from the
pile-driving rock & roll and folksy introspection of pub-rockers
like Brinsley Schwarz, adding touches of cult singer/songwriters

Well, they've done it again. I liked
Lil'Beethoven. I loved Hello Young Lovers. I suspect I will soon be
adoring Exotic Creatures of the Deep. It's a progression again,
continuing the sound that the Mael's have defined over the last couple
of records. There's humour, there's wit. There's catchy melodies and
cleverly constructed meters. There's also a thematic sound. I'm not
saying it all sounds the same, but almost like a concept album it's all
coming from one place. The top layer is Russell's multi-tracked

As
a huge fan of Icehouse, I was very suprised at the quality of their
freshman debut. This is an outstanding album form top to finish. Iva
Davies combines the best of various glam and New Wave influences and
melds them together by creating crafty incisve pop songs. The band is
more raw and heavy on guitar than on Primitive Man, and this actually
gives Flowers an edge over its successor. Although the proper album
doesn't have that one pure sweet confection like Angel Street or Trojan
Blue, ever

Artist: INXS Album: X Released: 1990 Source: Atlantic
Genre: pop rock/new wave Format: eac.ape.257mb
Review:

The seventh album from Australia's INXS
basically sticks to the formula set up on Kick, mixing solid remixable
dancefloor beats with slightly quirky production tricks, Michael
Hutchence's rough-edged, bluesy vocals, and some good solid song hooks.
The most immediate numbers are, of course, the two singles, "Suicide
Blonde" and "Disappear," but other tracks stand out as potential hit
material as well, including the anthemic "The Stairs." The biggest
problems with the album are a tendency to play it safe, stick

This is a great album featuring several of
the band's strongest songs as well as fine wordplay throughout by
Richard Butler. It's also the Furs' most American-oriented release,
produced (nicely) by Todd Rundgren and peppered with clever lyrics
saluting "President Gas" or name checking "Ma B. and her boys" (I assume
Ma Barker?).
As already noted by a few reviewers, there is a
mysterious alteration of the final song, "Yes I Do." This irritates
